Questions

Frequently asked questions

Which regime should I choose?

Whichever gives you the lower tax for the year. Broadly, if your deductions and exemptions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest) add up to a large amount, the Old Regime often wins; if you claim little, the New Regime usually does. The calculator computes both and tells you the difference.

Can I switch regimes every year?

Salaried taxpayers without business income can generally choose afresh each year when filing. Those with business or professional income face restrictions on switching back. Check your specific situation with a tax professional.

What is the rebate under Section 87A?

It cancels out your tax entirely when total income is within a threshold — ₹12,00,000 in the New Regime and ₹5,00,000 in the Old Regime. The New Regime also gives marginal relief just above the threshold so a small increase in income does not create a huge jump in tax.

Is the standard deduction automatic?

Yes, if you have salary income. The calculator applies ₹75,000 in the New Regime and ₹50,000 in the Old Regime without you entering anything.

How is HRA exemption calculated?

It is the lowest of: HRA actually received, rent paid minus 10% of basic salary, or 50% of basic in a metro city (40% elsewhere). It applies only in the Old Regime.

How are capital gains treated?

Listed equity short-term gains are taxed at 20% and long-term gains at 12.5% above the ₹1,25,000 annual exemption. These are taxed at their own rates, outside the normal slabs, and the 87A rebate does not apply to them.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No. Every calculation runs inside your browser and your entries are saved only on this device, so you can come back later. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I use this instead of filing a return?

No. This is a planning and educational estimate only. Your actual liability must be computed and filed with the Income Tax Department, ideally with help from a qualified chartered accountant.
